A Subdivision of the Iowa Library Association
Deciding whether or not to maintain a local history collection for your community is often based on what you already have in your collection and what other organizations in your community are offering. Having a local history collection means giving your community a unique resource that both local residents and visitors will use. Many of those users will be genealogists. Genealogy is one of the most popular hobbies in this country and one that requires a lot of research. Genealogists are frequent library users.
The Local History and Genealogy subdivision's purpose is to encourage the preservation and dissemination of the history of Iowa's libraries, communities, and regions by its libraries. To accomplish that end, the subdivision sponsors sessions at the Iowa Library Association conference on preservation, collection development, archives, genealogy, and more.
Become a member by checking the Local History and Genealogy subdivision on your ILA membership form. By joining, you will insure that there continues to be conference sessions on local history and genealogy topics to help you create and maintain a unique resource for your library and have an opportunity to network with other librarians interested in these topics.

Performers Showcase 2022
The Youth Services Subdivision hosted our annual Performer’s Showcase at the beginning of November. The talent was amazing!! Thanks so much to all the performers who came out and shared with us. We had about 50 librarians in the room with us live and another 65 via zoom so thank you also for taking the time out of your busy schedules to support the amazing performers in Iowa and the Midwest.
Here’s a link to the YouTube video if you missed the show or would like to go back and look at some of the performances again. Contact information for each performer is at the very beginning of the whole video.

AWARDS
The Youth Services Subdivision presents the Quality Time Award to someone who is a positive leader in youth services, who contributes to the library/youth services profession, and who is an overall exemplary professional.
The Youth Services Subdivision also sponsors the Bridge to Reading Picture Book Award. The Bridge to Reading Picture Book Award purpose is to promote early literacy and reading to children through the introduction of quality picture books nominated by a committee of librarians, teachers, preschool and early literacy leaders. The award book will be chosen based on quality and characteristics of a good "read aloud". The award will engage children in the voting process and develop a lifelong love of books and reading. Iowa libraries, day cares, and early childhood classrooms are encouraged to read the years selections to kids and allow the kids to vote.
